Election commissioner Om Prakash Rawat has been made the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). They will take over from January 23.They will replace the retired CEC AK Jyoti. Om Prakash Rawat will take charge of CEC on January 23 2018.
About Om Prakash Rawat
Born on December 2, 1953 in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh.
Education: Rawat has an MSc in Social Development Planning (SDP) from the United Kingdom. Apart from this, he has also secured an MSc degree in Physics.
Om Prakash Rawat is a 1977 batch IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre.He was made Election Commissioner in August 2015.
Important positions in Madhya Pradesh
Rawat was the collector of Narasimhapur and Indore. He played a vital role in preventing communal riots in Mau and Indore.
He is also the Chief Secretary of the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Principal Secretary (Tribal Welfare) of the Women and Child Development Department, Vice Chairman of the Narmada Valley Development Authority and Excise Commissioner.
Before becoming an Election Commissioner, he was Secretary in the Heavy Industries Department at the Center. He was also made a joint secretary in the defense ministry.
